Back
in 1950, our community consisted of dairy farmland.
The City of Denver Fire Department, and the Lowry Air Force Base handled
fires and other types emergencies for the community.
Residents, understanding the need for quicker attention to fires and
medical emergencies, took it upon themselves to create a special district that
would enable them to assist each other in times of need.
A special district was established on September 1, 1950 by a group of
civic minded charter members. A
Volunteer Fire Department, consisting of neighbors and friends, working on
behalf of the Fire Protection District grew quickly, purchasing pumpers and
equipment to assist them in their task.
Land
that was centrally located in the community was identified as a proper setting
for a fire station. The Cunningham family owned the land at the time.
The Family donated this land to the Fire Protection District and it was
accepted in exchange for the family name “Cunningham” to be used in
perpetuity as a name for the Fire Protection District.
From
a volunteer organization in 1950, until our first paid personnel in 1983, the
Cunningham Fire Protection District transforms in conjunction with the
community.
From our first Fire Chief, Fidelis “Dale” Wasinger to
our current Fire Chief, Jerry Rhodes, we have maintained the values adopted by
each member of our organization, a strong commitment to safety for the citizens
and fire fighters, as well as a commitment to our community and families.
